Clay Day: Clay People & Bowls from Molds

Whether you are in the semester 1, Advanced art class or the 6th grade rotation art class at Riverview Middle:

• you are starting with a sketch of what you are making out of clay. Clay is fun but clay has it's own set of rules that you need to follow and respect. 
• For example the more you  handle the clay the harder it is to work with. It may stay together when you make it but it comes apart when dry if not joined together. 
• Clay shrinks when fired. 
• Clay breaks easily!!

Once you have your sketch completed, you have some clay, tools and sponge; watch the video and start. 

1. Important if you are making the clay people to join all the separate pieces so it is one piece.  

2. Also important is to make your person upright and not lying done. The clay person needs to have dimension and if made lying down it will look like a 2d "cut out" clay person.

3. Anything sticking out will most likely get broken so keep things close to the clay body. When making the  bowl, draw with a pencil on the surface and if you make a mistake wash off with a sponge. Fill the bowl with drawings.

4. When your clay person or any project is finished it must have your first name, last name and period on it. Make sure you can read it. If you can't read it... how will I be able to?

Clay Animals & Chia Pets

• Making an animal of your choice with 2 pinch pots.
• First sketch what animal you want to make, color and upload to Artsonia
• Make 2 pinch pots, join and add legs, head, and whatever you need to make it look like your animal.
• Add the animals texture. Will not be excepted without texture.
• If you are making a chia pet you will add the grooved lines for the seeds to grow and cut a hole at the very top of your animal.
• When done put your name and period on it with pasta letters.
• Glaze and photograph again and you can take it home.

1. Draw and upload the shoe you want to make to Artsonia. Who did the shoe belong to? Write a paragraph on Artsonia.
2. Role slab and cut out sides, bottom and top
3. Score slip, join and add texture.

For fun... - (middle school students can't be in Van's Custom Culture contest) but they can Design 4 Van's shoes. Each pair must be customized to represent one of four themes: 1. Action Sports (Defined as boards and bikes, not stick and ball!) 2. Music 3. Art 4. Local Flavor (Inspired by your surrounding community, city or state) ONE THEME PER PAIR!

• sketch: Draw the zentangle pattern you would like to draw on your clay snow globe. 
• You need to have at least some real things tangled up with your abstract zentangle, line, doodle, patterns. 
•  clay: Start out with clay by making the most perfect 2 pinch pot globe you can make. 
• When it is as perfect as you can make it, carve your zentangle patterns in the clay. 
• Not to deep. 
• Paint parts with red slip and burnish the globe by rubbing it until it shines. 
• Make a base with 2 circle coils for the globe to sit on. Name and period on both clay parts.
